2011-2012

Welcome to English 11: World Literature! The purpose of this class is to provide all students with greater experience in reading, writing, thinking, speaking, and grammar. Juniors take the ACT in April, and preparation for this test will also take place in this class. To ensure success in this class, please read the following policies and procedures, and then share them with your parents/guardians. I hope you have an enjoyable and educational year in my class.

Behavioral Expectations

  1. Behavioral Expectations: 1. Be prepared to succeed! Success in this class means being on time and attending class regularly. Class begins when we begin the day’s instructions. Habitual tardiness and/or absences will result in parent and/or administrative contacts.
  2. 2. Remain respectfully silent while the teacher or other students are speaking.
  3. 3. Listen carefully to instructions; consult the homework board, and record due dates. All due dates are posted on this board.
  4. 4. Treat others the way you wish to be treated. Act respectfully toward everyone.
  5. 5. Be RESPONSIBLE for your choices; expect to be held accountable.
  6. 6. Stay on task; do your share of work in group situations.
  7. 7. DO NOT COPY FROM PEERS OR OTHER SOURCES; THIS IS PLAGIARISM. Plagiarism is wrong and will not be tolerated; you will earn a failing grade if caught.
  8. 8. Leave make up, combs, brushes, perfume/cologne, and hats in bags or lockers. Cell phones must be on silent mode or off. If you disrupt class, I will remove the disruption. You will see an administrator to retrieve your belongings.
  9. 9. Treat all school property with respect. Although water is allowed, please do not consume food or beverages in this classroom. What is seen will be taken and thrown away
  10. 10. Students will receive four bathroom passes at the beginning of the semester. Each is worth five points at the end of the semester. Please use them wisely. Do not lose them; they are irreplaceable.

Academic Expectations

  1. Neatness is necessary for success. Take pride in the work you complete, and your grade will reflect your effort.
  2. Handwritten work will be accepted in BLUE OR BLACK INK ONLY. Please have your own supply of these pens. Failure to hand in work in BLUE OR BLACK INK will result in the assignment of a “0”.
  3. All out of class essays are TYPED. Make arrangements prior to due dates to complete your typing.
  4. Active participation is a necessity and a requirement for this class. Come prepared to share ideas and opinions as well as ask questions.
  5. LATE WORK IS NOT ACCEPTED; however, all work turned in early or on time will earn students a reward of 25 bonus points per six weeks grading period. This is a total of 75 bonus points per semester.
  6. Excused and unexcused absences/Academic Enhancement: You have TWO days from the day you were absent to contact me regarding your absence and to arrange times to make up your work. Failure to contact me within this timeline results in zeroes being assigned for missed work. Have your calendar with you as well!

Please do not ask during class as my attention is focused on our lessons. Please do not be offended if you are asked to come to AE (that’s partly why we have AE). Remember, NO ABSENCE REMOVES THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY AND OBLIGATION TO FIND OUT AND MAKE UP MISSED WORK! If you are absent for only 1 block, you still need to visit with me that day, which counts as one of your make up days.
